    Introduction

On the 12th of October-2011, Apple released iOS 5.0 . One of the new features in it is wireless syncing. This means you can sync your iPod touch, iPhone, iPad with your computer’s iTunes without the need to connect the iDevice to your computer using the traditional USB cable. In this article, I will be showing you how simply it is to configure Wi-Fi Sync.

Wi-Fi syncing requires the following :

    • iOS 5.0 or later
    • iTunes 10.5 or later

In this article, I will be setting up Wi-Fi syncing for my iPhone. To setup Wi-Fi syncing, follow the below steps:

    1. Open iTunes

    2. Connect your iDevice to your computer using the USB cable

    3. From the left side pane of iTunes, click on your device name, then click on the Summary tab, and enable the option Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi

Apply the changes and Sync one last time with your iDevice using the USB cable. After this step is completed, you can now remove the USB cable.

    4. Now from your iPhone, open Settings, tap on General > then tap on iTunes Wi-Fi Sync >

    5. Click on the Sync Now button, and the Wi-Fi syncing operation will start. As you can see, in this page, it contains few information related to the computer identity your iPhone is syncing with, for example in my case, my computer name is Tarek Majdalani’s MacBook Pro . Another piece of information is the last time your iPhone was synced with the computer ( ex. last Sync : Today 4:56 PM )

If you wish to cancel the sync at anytime, you can click on the Cancel Sync button.

    Tips:

If Wi-Fi syncing is still not working, then try the following :

    • Close iTunes
    • Turn off the iPhone

Then turn on your iPhone, open iTunes and try now.

    Summary

Wi-Fi Sync is a new feature introduced with iTunes 10.5 and iOS 5.0 . Setting up and using Wi-Fi Syncing is an easy operation to do. Although the USB cable is not required to sync your device anymore, you will still need it to charge the battery of your iDevice.
