Microsoft 365 Keeps Asking You to Sign In? 9 Fixes for Word, Excel and Outlook

By · October 28, 2026 · Updated October 28, 2026

Repeated Microsoft 365 sign-in prompts can be caused by expired sessions, multiple accounts, network restrictions or app licensing. Use these safe checks before removing any stored credentials.

Before you start: Save your work and back up important files before changing system or cloud settings. Menu names may differ between releases.

Step 1. Identify the affected app and account

Note whether the prompts happen in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or all apps. Confirm the email address shown is the correct account.

Step 2. Check Microsoft 365 service health

For work or school users, ask an administrator to check service health; consumer users should verify their Microsoft account works in a browser.

Step 3. Sign in through a browser

Open https://www.microsoft365.com/ and confirm that you can sign in, including completing any required multifactor authentication.

Step 4. Update Microsoft 365 applications

Open an Office app and check its supported update controls. Install pending operating-system updates as appropriate.

Step 5. Check date, time and connectivity

Make sure the computer’s clock and time zone are correct and try a reliable network without an interfering VPN or proxy.

Step 6. Verify the subscription or license

In an Office app, check File → Account on Windows or the equivalent account view on Mac. Confirm the account has a valid license for desktop apps.

Step 7. Sign out and back into only the affected account

Save work first. Sign out using the application’s account controls, close the apps and sign in again. Avoid disconnecting unrelated work accounts.

Step 8. Use supported Office repair on Windows

Open Windows Settings → Installed apps → Microsoft 365 → Modify and try Quick Repair before Online Repair where supported. Online Repair may require downloading app files.

Step 9. Escalate device or conditional-access problems

If managed by an employer, don’t clear device registration, erase keychains or delete tokens indiscriminately. Ask IT to review sign-in logs, device compliance and Conditional Access failures.

Frequently asked questions

Will these steps delete personal files? The initial checks do not require deleting personal data. Where cleanup or reset is involved, confirm backups and the effect on synced files before proceeding.
